I have heard that Tamora Pierce is quiet unwell and I mean this to be a positive post so I will try to be a bit brief*

Ive spoken before of the Tortall books being something of a web that held me and my friends together as kids as we all enjoyed them but I know their influence is a little further reaching than that by now.

Tamora’s stories were very precious to me as a terribly shy little girl who would rather be day dreaming than learning to navigate the world. The song of the lioness series were some of the first real novels I got a hold of after I’d learnt to read on my own and I always appreciated the way the stories never presumed that a child wouldn’t be able to understand or appreciate hard topics. At the time I did appreciate too that there was all these women leading full, adventurous and authentic lives while still being sometimes flawed and human, I loved to see that, I needed to see that. I hope that some of Kel’s resilience and compassion crept into me as I grew to strengthen my spine and to warm my heart (just a little), and I know some of Alanna’s hardly concealed intolerance of prickish behaviour fiery spirit must have sunk in along the way as well since I’m not so timid as I was (but also a little)

I would not know when I picked up these stories from the school and town libraries that one day as a not very adventurous but authentically flawed and human man living a full life I would take these characters and ask them to help me along on my long journey of learning to draw. I’m not sure at all if I’d have been able to have progressed quiet so far with wrangling my watercolours if I didn’t have my interpretation of Tamora’s Tortall so clearly imprinted behind my eyelids giving me the familiarity I don’t have with other works and the confidence that I don’t have with my own so that I can just get on with the work of learning and definitely be way more ambitious than if I’d just set out on my own.

So from happy days at my grandparents spent dragging a notebook and my one beat up copy of In The Hand Of The Goddess to study the art of storycraft through creeks and away from farm work to even more happy days blushing Corams cheeks in that one little painting that I sadly cannot find, my deepest thank you Tamora Pierce for being such a driving force of inspiration
